In a report released on Friday, Canada announced it plans to add over a million new immigrants over the course of the next few years.
In 2017, it added more than 280,000 permanent residents, and expects that number to increase in the coming years.
Canada’s Minister of Immigration, himself an immigrant from Somalia, said in the report “Canada faces new challenges such as an aging population and declining birth rate, and immigrants have helped address these by contributing to Canada’s labor force growth.”
In order for Canada to reach its goal, the country would have to add about 350,000 new people — the equivalent of almost 1% of their current population — in each of the next 3 years.
More than 6 million immigrants have arrived in Canada since 1990, with nearly 1 in every 5 current Canadians having immigrated from a foreign country.
