Meghan Markle confirms dad won’t be at wedding but mum on whether mom will walk her down the aisle

Meghan Markle on Thursday confirmed what’s already been reported: that her father’s heart surgery won’t allow him to walk her down the aisle when she marries Prince Harry Saturday.

The day after Thomas Markle underwent serious heart surgery near his home in Mexico, Kensington Palace issued a statement from Meghan, which reads, “Sadly, my father will not be attending our wedding. I haver always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health.”

But the statement didn’t mention whether Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, will step in to take over the traditional father-of-the-bride job and walk her down the aisle during Saturday’s globally televised ceremony at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.

Ragland, 61, is considered the frontrunner for the job. The social worker and yoga instructor arrived in the United Kingdom Wednesday after a 10-hour flight from Los Angeles and spent the night at Kensington Palace, the Daily Mail said.

Ragland, who is said to be very close to her daughter, is expected to meet Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, and Prince William and Kate Middleton in the the next 24 hours.

Thomas Markle’s heart surgery was the culmination of a fraught week for the American bride and for Buckingham Palace, with royal aides facing questions over whether they did enough to protect him from aggressive paparazzi who convinced him to collaborate in a series of controversial pre-wedding photos.

Sources insist to the Daily Mail that strenuous efforts were made to help Thomas Markle. But the 73-year-old former Hollywood lighting designer is said to be a “proud” man who was reluctant to take help — financial or otherwise — from his daughter.

Over the weekend, the Daily Mail reported that Thomas Markle had collaborated with a Los Angeles-based photo agency to stage a series of relatively benign photos that showed him happily preparing to attend the royal wedding.

The controversy came from the fact that Markle may have been paid for his efforts, and questions arose over whether he was trying to cash in on his proximity to the royal family.

However, Page Six, citing sources, said Markle may have felt forced into participating in the photo shoot by the agency threatening to publish unflattering photos of him.
