Being No. 2 does not sit well with John Travolta.

Tom Cruise and Travolta are the two biggest names associated with Scientology, but a deep division developed between the Hollywood heavy hitters after Cruise surpassed Travolta in the church’s hierarchy, according to a former church member.

The feud has been ongoing for years, according to Cruise’s former bodyguard Brendan Tighe. In 2008, he said Travolta became incensed when the church recognized Cruise as its most dedicated member by giving him with its Freedom Medal of Valor award.

“It’s no secret that Cruise and Travolta despised each other,” Tighe told the Australian publication New Idea. “I can assure you Travolta doesn’t recognize Cruise as a superior in any way. When Cruise got that medal, Travolta was so pissed off.”

Travolta’s jealousy, according to Tighe, stems from his belief that he was once Scientology leader David Miscavage’s “favorite son.”

“Cruise is the only celeb with a direct line to Miscavige,” said Tighe. “Travolta didn’t have that. Travolta doesn’t get anything free, no one is giving him absurd gifts like an airplane hangar, custom-made bikes, or over-the-top favors.”
