If there’s a recent expert on quarterbacking for the Raiders, it’s Rich Gannon. Or perhaps he’ll cede that distinction to Derek Carr.
Gannon complimented the current Raiders quarterback — both his abilities and his improvement — during an interview Tuesday with The Greg Papa Show on 95.7 The Game.

When Papa suggested that Carr could lead Oakland to the same heights Gannon and the 2002 Raiders reached, Gannon replied, “He’s well on his way.”

“I just think he’s becoming a more accomplished player at that position,” Gannon told Papa. “The anticipation continues to get better. I just think his overall command of the offense — you see him at the line of scrimmage, changing protections and plays and things like that.”
Gannon also praised Carr’s communication and leadership.
“Clearly he’s more vocal than he’s been in the past and I think he’s taken ownership of it,” Gannon said. “You’ve got the change at coordinator, but at the end of the day, I think you see a guy that’s really in control. He knows how to play the position, he gets the ball out quick, he knows where his quick-answer throws are.”

Despite concerns before the 2014 NFL Draft about Carr’s mobility, Gannon added, the Raiders QB displayed a capability to escape pressure in the victory over Tennessee. And that was a crucial victory, Gannon said.
“That’s a big win, to go on the road in Week 1, down there in Nashville,” Gannon said. “This Tennessee team is going to be a much-improved team from a year ago. But that was a good way to start the season.”
