Honey’s Donuts in Deep Cove gets titanic shoutout from Kate Winslet

Peering with intensity into a camera on the paparazzi-lined red carpet at the Toronto Film Festival, Kate Winslet had something very important to tell the world.

“I pine for Honey’s Donuts in Deep Cove. I pine for Honey’s Donuts in Deep Cove,” the Titanic star repeated for emphasis.

Physically Winslet was attending the premiere of The Mountain Between Us, the mountain survival movie she filmed with Idris Elba in British Columbia last year, but her mind was in the scenic North Vancouver enclave enjoying a donut.

Winslet, an Oscar winner and seven time nominee, was asked if she enjoyed working in Vancouver. She insisted she loves our city, but her voice — and her eyes — indicated her feelings for Honey’s Donuts went so much beyond love.

Ashak Saferali, who has owned and operated the Deep Cove destination with his wife Ashifa for 22 years, appreciated the shout out from one of the most popular actresses in Hollywood history.

“That was such an amazing endorsement,” said Saferali.

“We get so many movie stars and so many stars come in and we want to give them the space and privacy … because they are constantly bombarded by the paparazzi and stuff. When they come in we treat them like normal people.”

Other stars served in the little North Vancouver donut shop over the years include Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Garner, Tim Allen and Victoria Principal.

Saferali says Honey’s Donuts has become a destination of choice for stars working in Hollywood North.

“Anybody that comes in here we treat really well. We take interest in them … and the word of mouth grows,” he said.

When asked if he would name a donut after Winslet, Saferali said he would consider it.

“Maybe we should, for sure,” he said.
