Bob Melvin: New A’s ballpark site perfect for Oakland


A’s manager Bob Melvin couldn’t be happier the team chose the Laney College site for its new ballpark. And that’s not just because Melvin happens to live near the proposed ballpark site.

“I think, for me, that’s about as good of a site as you can pick,” Melvin said Wednesday before the team’s game in Boston. “I live in fairly close proximity and, you know, to be able to incorporate walking distance from Jack London (Square) and from Lake Merritt and downtown … the sightlines of the city, Oakland Hills.

“I think it really ties everything together beautifully,” Melvin added. “I don’t know that they could have picked a better site.”

More than anything, Melvin was pleased to see real momentum continue to build toward finding a permanent home for the team in Oakland.

“I think it’s something certainly for our fan base to look forward to, especially the people that live in Oakland in particular,” Melvin said. “The whole basis this year was talking about being rooted in Oakland and this ballpark
really typifies that.”
